Do you remember your God Stories? These are the times that God acted in your life, and there’s no doubt that it was Him.
We need to remember our God Stories to give ourselves encouragement and strengthen our faith, even in the face of fear. God Stories remind us that God will move in our lives no matter what, and they can fuel other people’s faith to overcome fear in their lives.
A God Story from David’s life that has encouraged countless people is his encounter with Goliath. David’s motive was clear when he stepped up against all eight feet of Goliath. He said:
“Who is this man who would defy the Living God’s army?”
David was more upset by Goliath’s taunting of God than he was by Goliath’s enormous size advantage. David’s conviction and love for the Father was his motivation to act, not the riches offered by King Saul (which included Saul’s daughter).
Saul wasn’t quite sure of David’s plan. David basically told him:
“I was watching my sheep one day, and a lion attacked one of my sheep. I actually grabbed one of my sheep out of the jaws of the lion. And then when it turned to me, I grabbed him by the hair and killed him. The only way I did this was by God’s strength in me. If God will deliver me from the lion and the bear, how much more will God back me up against someone who is defying Him?”
And he also mentioned killing a bear with his bare hands (if that happened to me, you’d never hear the end of it). David tells these God Stories to fuel the flames of his convictions. In recalling those stories and sharing them with great passion, he is convinced that God won’t let him down in the face of Goliath.
The result of David sharing his God Stories: Saul buys into David’s convictions.
God Stories are the essence of my second book Simply Sasquatch. In it, I encourage readers to remember their testimony and their encounters with Christ. They need to remember that God still moves today, even if it’s not as obvious as it was in the Bible.
Two main things to do with our God Stories:
- Tell the stories. The best thing that we can do, especially for people who are unsure of what they think of God, is to share what God has done and how enthusiastic you are about it. Sometimes we’re afraid of what people think, and that hides the joy that comes from the story. Just get past what people think, and let God continue to do the work He started when your God Story first occurred.
- Remember your God stories to help you do what’s right. If you’re involved in something that you know that you shouldn’t be, look to a God Story for the conviction and reminder that God is never too far away.
If you want to know happened when David followed his convictions into battle against Goliath, be sure to read 1 Samuel 17. It’s a sweet read for the action fan in all of us.
We’d love to hear your God Story. Please leave your God Story in the comments to share with everyone. You never know when God will use your story to encourage someone, even long after you post it here!
